Your association’s members can teach you a lot.
Exit interviews are a great learning experience, says Scott Oser.
“Negative feedback isn’t anyone’s favorite thing, but it’s a necessary evil to go through in order to grow,” he says. “After all, if something is causing member satisfaction to go down, wouldn’t you want to know? When a member decides to leave your organization, ask for their help just one last time, and have them complete an association exit survey.”
Oser suggests asking specific questions. Examples include:
- Why did you decide not to renew your membership?
- When did you decide not to renew your membership?
- How would you describe the overall culture of the organization?

- Reframe your mindset.
- Think of networking as building relationships.
- Network in a comfortable environment.
- Bring a long a friend.
- Take a long-term approach.
“Whether you’re introverted, someone who experiences social anxiety or you simply hate networking, meeting new people in a professional context can be intimidating,” writes Jamie Kravitz. “But believe it or not, making a successful connection through networking doesn’t have to feel like work.”
Knowledge entrepreneurship is the newest form of knowledge transfer, and it’s something young professionals are embracing.
“Today, young professionals with remarkable versatility and strong personal brands are highly valued beyond those who merely have degrees from one prestigious institution or another, particularly when it comes to opportunities and careers as we’ve come to an era where digital aptitude is the most crucial skill,” writes Ademola Adekunbi in Entrepreneur.
Some of the reasons?
Digital savviness and comfort with new technologies; competence not just degrees; and digital technology bolster entrepreneurship.
